Financial services giant, Visa, has agreed with Kenyan mobile operator, Safaricom, to allow the connection of M-Pesa’s 24 million users and 173,000 local merchants to Visa’s 61 million merchants and its more than 3 billion cards.
Both companies also agreed to collaborate “on the development of products that will support digital payments for M-Pesa customers.”
With this joint effort, Visa and Safaricom will seek to eliminate barriers to global commerce and offer an expanded set of mobile e-commerce capabilities to merchants and consumers by enabling secure and convenient cashless payment solutions.

Recently Visa has been on a partnership spree ensuring that it has a major chunk of the financial services business in Africa. Visa’s recent strategic partnerships with Africa Fintech players is fueled by the need to reach the next one billion consumer opportunity in Africa.
Recent partnership announcements include MFS Africa, Chipper Cash, Pesapal.
It is worthy of note that Visa invested the sum of $200million in Interswitch making the company the first African Fintech Unicorn.
