Wow, this is a real game-changer! Ever wanted to call someone on X, formerly known as Twitter? Oh well, soon, you’ll get your chance, because according to Twitter/X owner Elon Musk, the company is about to launch video and audio calls.
In a tweet Thursday, Musk also listed some of the feature’s traits: It will work on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, he wrote, and no phone number will be needed.
Musk didn’t say anything on when the feature might launch, beside saying it’s “coming.”
This is not the first time we’ve heard of audio and video calls on Twitter/X. The company’s designer Andrew Conway shared screenshots of the feature in action back in July.
In the screenshot, the audio and video call options are added in the top left of the DM screen. There’s no word on whether this feature will only be available for Blue subscribers.
Musk calls video and audio calls on Twitter/X “unique” as he deems X the “effective global address book.” To us, it makes more sense to call people you already know and have in your address book, and most of us do that either directly, or in an app such as WhatsApp, which is also available on all major platforms.
The audio and video calls are, however, another step towards Musk’s vision of X becoming the “everything app,” which will include chat, calls, banking, payment services, and more.
