The United Nations Food Systems Summit has launched an innovative competition for SMEs and food startups. The competition aims to find the best SMEs around the world transforming food systems that are already in existence and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Food Systems Summit Dr. Agnes Kalibata commented on the values of SMEs in the generation of innovation and the positive contribution they have to society.
“Globally, leaders need to focus more on the hidden contribution small businesses, make towards the nourishment of communities, regeneration of nature, and creation of jobs. These everyday businesses and their employees are at the forefront of the efforts in strengthening our food systems and the small business competition plans on celebrating these efforts and revealing their inspirational stories. The Summit is open to everyone and encourages such enterprises to make their voice known to help us understand the kind of support they need to thrive.”
Applications for the competition started on 29 April and closes on June 4, 2021.
The competition is titled “Best Small Business: Good Food for All”, aim to select 50 of the best SMEs whose works tallies with the aim of the summit in delivering all the 17 SDGs by providing sustainable, healthy food, and livelihood for everyone. Additionally, the competition plans on acknowledging SMEs who have played a vital role in “Building back better” from the harrowing impacts of the pandemic.
Best Small Business: Good Food for All acknowledges SMEs that have innovated the consumption, disposal, and production of food. Application for the competition started on 29 April and closes on June 4, 2021.

A panel of professional judges will analyze the contestants on the amount of contribution their business has to an equitable and sustainable food system for communities they are active in. A survey reveals that there is a drop in revenue of the European SMEs by 70% as a result of the financial effects of the pandemic.
The Summit will celebrate those who play their part in transformation via innovation in the way small businesses consume, dispose of food, produce, and offer lessons for the development of greater economic resilience and sustainability.
A pre-summit event will be held in Rome, Italy in ult 2021 to showcase the best SMEs in the competition.
