The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in partnership with the Botswana Ministry of Foreign Affairs have introduced a performance dashboard system aimed at bolstering Botswana’s digital agenda. The online platform was officially launched by Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lemogang Kwape, in Gaborone.
The performance dashboard system, according to the ECA, stands as an advanced web-based tool accessible through conventional internet browsers on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Primarily designed for internal use, the platform operates under controlled access through personalised invitations, boasting adaptability, agility, and cost-efficiency through open-source technologies.
Tailored specifically for Botswana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the system provides an instantaneous, comprehensive overview of key performance indicators (KPIs), empowering managerial oversight. It facilitates progress tracking, identifies emerging trends, and supports strategic decision-making anchored in data.
Minister Lemogang Kwape expressed gratitude for ECA’s efforts in developing the system, emphasising its role in delivering real-time data, showcasing Botswana’s progress, and evaluating ministry-specific performances. He highlighted the platform’s alignment with Botswana’s national digital transformation strategy, positioning the country as a leader in digital technology and effective service delivery.
“The innovative dashboard system is in line with Botswana’s Vision 2036 agenda that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on digital transformation,” said Kwape. He emphasised the vision’s focus on investment in research, development, innovation, and accelerating the country’s digital transformation agenda.
Oliver Chinganya, the director of ECA’s Africa Centre for Statistics, conveyed ECA’s commitment to advancing digital governance excellence in Botswana. The dashboard incorporates visual aids such as charts, graphs, and gauges, offering quick insights into performance metrics. Beyond KPI tracking, the system includes data entry, validation, and approval processes to enhance data quality.
Chinganya emphasised the transformative nature of the platform, extending beyond a conventional tool. He noted its potential for adoption across various government sectors and ECA member states, envisioning it as a benchmark for digital governance excellence. The dashboard not only streamlines performance monitoring but also fosters efficient internal collaboration, reducing dependence on external tools for data and information management.
