The Coordinator of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has disclosed that the Institution has developed a local device that would drive the performance of the Alpha Jet used by the Nigerian Air Force in light attacks and advanced training.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, Bukar stated that the device dubbed the ‘Anti-skid braking system’ enables pilots to slow down the speed of the aircraft and maintaining its equilibrium even on wet runways.

He said, “The device was developed by Muhammad Shuwa from the Center for Entrepreneurship of the University. As I am talking to you, this device has already been put to use on the Alpha jet.”

Bukar also disclosed that the University has developed: “Hybrid Solar Drier, an equipment that can be used to dry fish and other agricultural produce using charcoal at night and solar during the day. This was the first innovation produced in the university by Muinat Bello.”

The Coordinator also revealed that the university has gotten a patent license for the products to shield against intellectual property theft.

According to him, the university is working on producing a cylindrical parabolic reflecting Telecom device that could be used by the Nigerian armed forces to detect movement in the air space.

Bukar stated that such a device would be used to consolidate on the efforts of the military in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

He said that the university is going on with plans towards organizing sensitization workshops in collaboration with the National Office of Technology Acquisition Promotion to boost the capacity of staff in the area of intellectual property.

However, Bukar pointed out poor funding and lack of partnership opportunities as the reasons why many types of research and inventions at the university have been stalled.
