WhatsApp is said to have entered the world of OTT (over-the-top) movies and entertainment with the first original short film “Naija Odyssey”.
This week, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform unveiled “Naija Odyssey,” its first original short film. It depicts the tale of NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose parents are from Nigeria and who was born in Athens, Greece.
The short film marks WhatsApp’s entry into the world of entertainment, an unheard-of move for a social messaging service.
With Antetokounmpo just signing an endorsement contract with WhatsApp, another first for the app, “Naija Odyssey” seems to be a strategy to promote the brand, unlike tech giant Apple’s original content.
A statement from the company’s global head of marketing for WhatsApp, Vivian Odior confirms “Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives. In navigating relationships, identity, and even adversity, WhatsApp is there — enabling you to embrace all sides of you by connecting you to those who matter most.”
Although Naija Odyssey is a reminder that the platform helps to connect people from various regions, some have said that WhatsApp’s intention is to make money having to capitalise on Antetokounmpo’s fame.
Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo is a Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player.
Last year, he won the NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks. He is also a two-time NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP.
In the trailer Giannis said, “In Greece, my teachers told stories of travelers battling the sea, fighting to find their way home to find themselves. I was on that same journey.
Giannis explains his life story in Naija Odyssey set to be released on Prime Video on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
