The Ugandan police force has revealed it will employ the use of a biometric solution connected to a centrally built database to combat crime. The new solution developed by Gemalto, an international technology company, will enabele Uganda’s police to electronically collect, store and process fingerprints, palm prints, and facial images.
According to Quartz Africa, the Eastern African country is also on the verge of improving the services of its police force by introducing another solution which is reported to help police officers capture individuals’ fingerprints using a mobile device.
The Police Undersecretary for the Uganda Police Force, Muhirwa Rogers, said, “Reliable biometric data is an extremely powerful tool for identifying individuals and bringing offenders to justice.
“Investment in Gemalto CABIS and LiveScan technology is the latest step forward in the modernization not just of Ugandan law enforcement, but our wider homeland security infrastructure.”
Concerns are however being raised from some quarters as to whether only the Ugandan police or Gemalto will have access to biometric data collected as it has been observed that foreign companies in the past collect these data and send them to their headquarters in their countries as witnessed in the case of Zimbabwe’s Artificial Intelligence solution.
