Uber’s Potential Expansion into the handyman business: A Sneak Peek into the ‘Chore’ Option

Uber appears to be considering an expansion beyond its traditional ridesharing and food delivery services. A portion of code discovered by Bloomberg hints at the introduction of a “Chore” option within the app, potentially enabling users to hire individuals for various tasks.

This is similar to the service offered by TaskRabbit, an online and mobile marketplace that matches freelance labor with local demand, allowing consumers to find help with everyday tasks, including furniture assembly, moving, delivery, and handyperson work.

The code suggests that users might have the capability to engage a worker, referred to as a “tasker” within the app, for a minimum duration of one hour. Users will likely be able to specify the task, estimate the time required for completion, and select a preferred time for the worker to arrive.

Following this, users would be required to input their address, a process similar to Uber’s food delivery and ridesharing apps. The app would then calculate the cost based on the anticipated time for task completion. Notably, the specific types of jobs available for hiring remain undisclosed, as the code did not provide any examples.

Uber is yet to respond to this story and it is not known when it will be launched.
