Uber Suspends Autonomous Vehicle Test After Woman’s Death

From Google to Uber and other car companies, they are all in a rat race to get autonomous or self-driving cars on the road. However, from reports, it seems there is still quite a long way to go before we get the perfect self-driving vehicle.

We hear that a 49-year-old woman was hit by an Uber self-driving car and killed as she crossed the street in Tempe, Arizona.

Consequently, the ride-sharing company announced that it was suspending self-driving car tests in all North American cities due to the ghastly accident.

Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened. https://t.co/cwTCVJjEuz

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We’re fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident.

The Ceo of Uber Dara Khosrowshahi reacted on Twitter tweeting “Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened.”

Police said the accident happened Sunday night while the car was in the autonomous mode. A human monitor was also behind the wheel.

The death comes a year after Uber took its self-driving cars off the road following an accident that left a Volvo SUV on its side in Arizona. The programme was later continued.
