In an obvious sign that it is the taxi-hailing app to beat despite fierce competition from competitors, Uber has introduced autonomous cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the United States of America in an auspicious plan to replace drivers with self-driving cars.
This launch is a pilot programme which will make self-driving cars abundantly and publicly available in the United States of America.
Interestingly, Uber has had this plan more than two years ago when it identified self-driving technology as the next stage in the ride-hailing business.
It made this actionable by opening the Advanced Technology Centre in Pittsburgh where it partnered with automobile manufacturers like Volvo to research into self-driving cars.
It is hoped in the near future this self-driving pilot programme will go beyond this stage, become the norm and it will be later extended to other parts of the world including Africa.
