Uber has introduced Apple’s CarPlay support to the iPhone, giving drivers the ability to control the app directly from the vehicle’s dashboard display.
TechCrunch confirmed an email was sent by the ridesharing service, reporting that the feature is rolling out to drivers across United States and hopefully will be available to all users by the end of the month. A guy named Andy Ventas also demonstrated this in a Hyundai Car on YouTube though didn’t explain the steps in the tutorial.
With the latest update to the Uber Driver app, drivers do not need to switch their phone screens or apps to be able to view and accept trips, and navigate and add rides to the queue.
Most modern cars come equipped with Apple’s CarPlay system, which transforms the car’s head unit into a touchscreen for use with an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Having the Uber driver app built into CarPlay eliminates the need for drivers to toggle between their phone and the screen, as well as between different apps, in order to view and accept trips, use navigation, and add rides to their queue.
With a larger display, drivers can more easily see the various elements of Uber’s navigation system, such as heat maps of areas with high demand, additional routes, and the sides of streets.
Procedures for linking the Uber driver app with Apple CarPlay
- Open the Uber app on your iPhone and tap Go to go online.
- Next, connect your iPhone to your car via cable or wirelessly (if your car supports it).
- Once connected, open up CarPlay, to start navigating easier.
Uber isn’t the first to have rolled out support for Apple’s CarPlay. Lyft, Uber’s competitor driver app, has also integrated the Apple’s CarPlay support.
