Uber expands in Nigeria; now available in Ibadan and Port-Harcourt

Ride sharing giant, Uber, has now expanded its footprint in Nigeria, making its service now available in the ancient city of Ibadan in Oyo state and the oil-rich city of Port-Harcourt in Rivers state.

With these two new cities, Uber is now available in five cities including Lagos, Abuja and Benin-City. Uber landed in Lagos in July 2014.

According to Tope Akinwumi, Country Manager for Uber Nigeria, “We are excited about this announcement as we remain committed to keeping riders moving and drivers earning despite the various challenges brought about by the pandemic.”

“We believe that Uber has the potential to provide an alternative source of income that is pivotal to our efforts to contribute to economic recovery and growth in the country,” says Akinwumi.

Riders in Port Harcourt and Ibadan will have the option of requesting UberX trips and can look forward to receiving an upfront price estimate, which means that they never have to guess how much they will need to pay.  Injury Protection is provided to both riders and drivers, at no cost to them. They are protected from the moment the trip is accepted, through to when the trip ends. Like any other insurance policy, this is subject to terms, conditions and limits.

Since launch, Uber has provided earnings opportunity for over *20 000 active driver-partners, and through this expansion, more Nigerians will have a chance at economic growth.  Uber’s technology is open and pro-choice, meaning the app is available to a broad number of transport operators to boost their occupancy rates and chances for profit.

“We plan to be everywhere. We want to be the option of choice for commuters, looking to get to where they need to quickly, safely and conveniently. With that in mind, any progressive, forward-thinking city is where we want to be. We are excited to launch in Ibadan and Port Harcourt, and look forward to growing our footprint in Nigeria,” adds Akinwumi.

Riders in Ibadan can enjoy 50% off 8 trips from Tuesday 5 October 2021 to Sunday 31 October 2021, with the code MOVEIBCITY to explore the city!

If you are in Port Harcourt, enjoy 50% off 8 trips from Tuesday 5 October 2021 to Sunday 31 October 2021, with the code MOVEPHCITY to explore the city!

This is rather late when compared to Bolt’s ride-hailing service which is currently present in 24 Nigerian states including Abia, Ebonyi, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Uyo, Calabar, Kano, Abeokuta, Enugu, Ibadan and Benin City amongst others.

With the launch in Ibadan and Port Harcourt, ride hailing subscribers now have other options to choose from.
