Digital banking institution TymeBank has announced a leadership transition set to take effect on 1 January 2026, with Cheslyn Jacobs stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Karl Westvig. Westvig, who has served on the bank’s executive team since 2023, will remain involved in an advisory capacity to support the transition and ongoing strategic initiatives.
Jacobs, a founding member of TymeBank, brings over a decade of institutional knowledge and leadership experience. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the bank’s commercial strategy and operational footprint since its inception. His appointment marks a significant milestone in TymeBank’s evolution, as the institution prepares to enter a new phase focused on accelerated innovation, enhanced customer experience, and sustainable growth.
Thabani Jali, Chairman of TymeBank Holdings, commented:
Cheslyn’s deep understanding of our customers, strategy, and people uniquely positions him to lead TymeBank into its next era. It’s time to compete even harder for market share as we mature as a business.
Jacobs holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial Psychology from the University of the Western Cape, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management from the Gordon Institute of Business Science. His career includes prior roles at Standard Bank and Deloitte, bringing a blend of financial services and consulting expertise to his leadership style.
Since joining Tyme in 2012 as Sales and Distribution Manager, Jacobs has steadily risen through the ranks. He became National Operations Manager at Tyme Infield, then Head of Sales and Services in 2019—the year TymeBank officially launched. In 2022, he was appointed Chief Commercial Officer, where he was responsible for driving revenue growth and expanding the bank’s customer base.
TymeBank, launched six years ago, has grown to become one of South Africa’s leading digital banks, with a customer base exceeding 11 million. The bank has distinguished itself through its low-cost, accessible banking model and strategic partnerships across retail and fintech sectors.
To ensure a smooth leadership transition, Jacobs and Westvig will work closely together for the first three months of 2026, maintaining momentum in the bank’s growth trajectory.
Jali added:
Karl was pivotal in integrating the Retail Capital business into the Tyme ecosystem. His leadership has been integral to building a strong foundation for TymeBank’s future success.
Jacobs’ appointment signals TymeBank’s readiness to scale further, deepen its market presence, and continue delivering innovative financial solutions to underserved communities across South Africa and beyond.
