Twitter is reportedly working on an in-app currency feature “coins” to help creators earn money from the platform.
This new feature was spotted by two app researchers, Jane Manchun Wong and Nima Owji, who often publish images of unreleased features. Their posts indicate that coins appear to be an extension of Twitter’s existing tipping feature. On Jane Manchum Wong’s screenshot, it states that “Coins allow you to support creators who Tweet great content.”
That is not all. Wong also spotted an “Awards” feature, which allows people to use coins to buy in-app gifts for others. According to Wong’s image shared, users would be able to buy gifts for as little as one coin (called “Mind Blown”) or as much as 5000 (called “Gold”). It’s not clear how much coins will cost, though Twitter would presumably get a cut of revenue generated from coin purchases.
It is also not clear when this feature would be launched since there is really no communication team anymore in the aftermath of Elon Musk’s takeover. We may hear about it very soon from the Chief Twit himself, Elon Musk.
This feature is not new as it imitates TikTok’s reward system which also involves coins. The TikTok coins are also in-app currencies that are bought with real money. You can then use the coins to tip content creators during live streams in the form of emojis.
This will be a welcome idea for the top Nigerian Tweeters in Nigeria like Victor Asemota, Dr. Ola Brown, David Hundeyin to name but a few.
