Social media giant, Twitter, has warned that it will suspend Twitter users who publicly hope for President Trump’s death from the coronavirus.
It was reported a couple of days ago that President Donald Trump and his wife Melania, tested positive to the coronavirus.
While some people are sympathetic about this, some people feel he deserves it since he behaved as if the coronavirus was not a major threat. He went around without a mask, did not make the wearing of face masks mandatory at political rallies. His family, specifically his son, was accused of propagating fake news about the virus. Some actually want him to die.
Social media giant Twitter told Motherboard, that users are not allowed to openly hope for Trump’s death on the platform and that tweets that do so “will have to be removed” and that they may have their accounts put into a “read only” mode.
Twitter said on its handle that “tweets that wish or hope for death, serious bodily harm or fatal disease against *anyone* are not allowed and will need to be removed. this does not automatically mean suspension.”
Interesting that Twitter is now reminding everyone on Twitter about this now that the patient is the “most powerful individual in the world”
Though it is interesting how the platform will be able to monitor and moderate its platform for this, Twitter told Motherboard that it won’t act on every single tweet. “We’re prioritizing the removal of content when it has a clear call to action that could potentially cause real-world harm,” said Twitter.
Some people have already tried circumventing this with tweets like the one below:
This disease has killed over 205,000 people in the United States and over 1million globally. There has been over 34.5 million coronavirus cases around the world as at today.
