Twitter’s Chief Twit, Elon Musk, announced that you would be able to do a video or voice chat from your Twitter handle to anyone on the platform. This ushers in the social messaging platform into the voice and chat messaging business like Instagram.
He also mentioned that you can now react to messages in a thread (not just the recent one) with any emoji. Previously you could only react to only the most recent DM with only a select set of emojis. Twitter will now have the same emoji reaction feature, which brings it in line with other messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram that already offer this functionality.
The billionaire owner of the social messaging platform has been looking for ways to increase the followers on the platform and revenue.
He also tweeted that with the latest version of the app, encrypted DMs feature would be released on Thursday. However he said that the feature would grow in sophistication meaning it might not be perfect for now. He said of the feature, “The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head.” Encryption in messages means that only the sender and receiver are able to see a message.
Sending an encrypted message is similar to sending a regular unencrypted message. If you are eligible to send encrypted messages, you will see a toggle after clicking on the message icon ✉️ to enable “encrypted” mode. Selecting an eligible recipient, composing a message and clicking send will send an encrypted message.
Users need to satisfy the following conditions in order to send and receive encrypted messages:
- both sender and recipient are on the latest Twitter apps (iOS, Android, Web);
- both sender and recipient are verified users or affiliates to a verified organization; and
- the recipient follows sender, or has sent a message to sender previously, or has accepted a Direct Message request from the sender before
