For the first time ever, Twitter tagged President Donald Trump’s tweet with a fact checking label.
The President had tweeted that “there is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-in Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent…”
A blue exclamation mark and a “get the fact about mail-in ballots” check was put under the tweet.
A click on the tag under the President’s tweet leads users to a page that describes Trumps assertions on mail-in ballot as unsubstantiated.
Twitter recently updated its policy and approach towards ‘misleading information’.
Twitter has always been under pressure to check or remove certain tweets which many people may find misleading. This led to the policies that were put in place to remove misleading tweets about the pandemic.
According to company spokesperson Katie Rosborough, the tweets “contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labeled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots.”
[Update]: Of course, you would not expect the American President to take this lying low. He has responded saying:
“.@Twitter is now interfering in the 2020 Presidential Election. They are saying my statement on Mail-In Ballots, which will lead to massive corruption and fraud, is incorrect, based on fact-checking by Fake News CNN and the Amazon Washington Post….”
“….Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen!”
