Twitter first shared information about this new update on its App on March 2nd, 2021. With Twitter Spaces, you can create a room and invite up to ten people to a voice conversation. Spaces are live for as long as they’re open; once ended, they will no longer be available publicly on Twitter.
This experience used to be open to users on iOS who got into the product’s private beta launch in December last year. Back then Android users could only join and talk in Spaces, but won’t be able to start their own. Twitter intends to add that feature soon for the benefit of Andriod users.
Even though the company seems ready to release the Spaces feature to everybody, they are still trying to get the product into a state where anyone can host a Twitter Space starting April. For now, only people on mobile app users can follow Spaces conversations, since it’s not available through its webpage or Twitter for Mac.
How to start a Twitter Spaces conversation
Once the feature is released to the public, you can follow these simple steps:
- Open the Twitter app on your iPhone;
- Press and hold the “Create Tweet” button;
- Press the new Spaces icon on the far left;
- You can also tap your profile image in Fleets, scroll to the far right, and tap ‘Spaces’.
The user can also select who can join with speaking privileges by choosing from “Everyone, People you follow, or Only people you invite to speak,” which lets the user send DM invites.
You can edit your Twitter Spaces room name and allow Share transcriptions (only available in English for now).
