Twitter shuts down Boko Haram’s account

In line with its policy of not allowing terrorist groups to use its platform to propagate their messages, social  media platform Twitter over the weekend shut down an account being used by Boko Haram, a US-designated terrorist group that is terrorizing northern Nigeria including neighboring countries.

According to report gathered by Innovation Village, Boko Haram launched the Twitter handle @AlurwaAlwuthqa apparently in a new public relations offensive posting video interviews and pictures of child soldiers being trained on gun handling.

Before it was shut down, Boko Haram used the Twitter account to announce it has captured Monguno, using Arabic and Hausa languages and sometimes using English as subtitles.

The account which started tweeting on the 18th of January with a message about Baga had garnered close to 5,000 followers before it was shutdown on Sunday.
