Elon Musk announced that Twitter is purging the platform to remove accounts that have experienced no activity at all for several years.
He followed up, saying that many accounts might experience in follower count. He also added in response to a question about username availability that “yes,” a lot of usernames were about to become available as a result of this move. However he did not elaborate on how people would get these available usernames.
Some months ago, the Twitter billionaire had considered selling usernames as a way to boost the platform’s revenue after he doled out $44 billion to buy the company. Once is not sure if he will go ahead with this plan.
In December 2022, Musk had announced on Twitter that approximately 1.5 billion accounts’ namespace would soon be cleared, with inactive accounts being removed as part of the process.
Twitter’s inactive account policy states that to keep an account active, the owner must log in once at least every 30 days. Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity.
