Twitter, Jack Dorsey Mock Facebook Outage

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger – basically every Facebook-owned platform – has been down for hours now. And Twitter is basking in the glory of it all, with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also appearing to be getting just as much pleasure out of today’s global Facebook outage as anyone.

The microblogging chief is tweeting through Facebook’s DNS issues by dunking on the company amid its latest round of scrutiny from The Wall Street Journal, 60 Minutes, and lawmakers.

WhatsApp trying to be cute on Twitter? Dorsey is there to remind you of the drama over WhatsApp’s privacy policy.

    👋 hello!

    — WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) October 4, 2021

Twitter’s account is obviously referencing the fact that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp users are flocking to alternative social media platforms while the Facebook-owned services are inaccessible.

#FacebookDown, #InstagramDown, and other related hashtags and keywords related to the Facebook outage have been trending on Twitter for hours now.

Twitter users suggesting Facebook’s domain name is somehow for sale? Dorsey wants a piece of the action — and to push Kanye West’s new album for some reason (to be clear, it does not appear that Facebook’s domain name is actually for sale, and Dorsey almost certainly knows this as well).

Dorsey does seem to like dunking on his company’s biggest rival; he brought the snark for Facebook’s rebrand and the company’s so far disastrous first steps into cryptocurrency. However, even though it’s been some time since we’ve seen its fail whale, the next time Twitter suffers an outage (it’s been known to happen), Dorsey shouldn’t expect any sympathy from his rivals.

Other social platforms are making the best of Facebook’s bad situation too.

Signal, an online messaging platform that offers end-to-end encryption, shared on its Twitter account that signups for its service are way up today.

Signups are way up on Signal (welcome everyone!) We also know what it’s like to work through an outage, and wish the best for the engineers working on bringing back service on other platforms #mondays

    — Signal (@signalapp) October 4, 2021

It wouldn’t be surprising to see platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Discord, and Telegram experience a bump in traffic as they fill in for Facebook’s video and community chat features.

Innovation Village will update this post as more online platforms and services share Facebook outage-related experiences.
