Twitter has begun testing a “CC” button that will allow users to toggle video captions on or off. The company made the announcement via its Twitter support page, noting that the feature is currently rolling out to some iOS users and will soon be available to Android users. Following the tweet is a video that demonstrates how the CC button will appear in the top-right corner of a video that includes subtitles.
With the new button, you’ll be able to toggle captions on and off, as well as see which clips have captions accessible (where that is possible).
The company has been working to improve its usability features since December 2021, which has included enhancements to its alt-text description display (which now includes a comparable ‘ALT’ button on tweeted images with descriptions) and auto-captioning on video clips. Auto captions are available on the web version, iOS and Android in more than 30 languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Hindi and many more.
Twitter has been experimenting with a variety of features over the last few months. Just a few days ago, Reverse engineer, Jane Manchun Wong leaked the company was developing a feature that would allow users to customise their profiles and tweets with a status. Users would appear to have the option of setting a profile-level status, as well as a status for a specific tweet. At the moment, it is unknown if users will be limited to pre-defined statuses or will be able to establish their own.
According to Wong’s screenshots, a status update option would be displayed above the tweet composer box. When you click the status button, a prompt appears asking, “What are you doing?” The screenshot illustrates several typical pre-set statuses from which you can choose, like “Shopping for groceries,” “Driving highway,” “Lurking Twitter,” and “Studying for the final exam.”
