Twitter is rolling out the ability to write longer tweets to Twitter Blue subscribers. Towards the end of Wednesday, February 8th, the company made the announcement that Twitter Blue members in the US can now “type all the way up to 4,000 characters.”
Twitter, however, expressed that longer Tweets could mean a lot of scrolling, and so they will be shortened at 280 characters on a user’s timeline. Meaning, you’ll see a “Show more” displayed at the end of 280th character prompting you to click and read the whole Tweet.”
There is currently no way to schedule these tweets or save them as drafts, but they could be useful if you’d rather not compose a long series of tweets to convey your point.
The microblogging platform wants to give users a practical reason to subscribe to Twitter Blue, asides being able to upload long videos and getting the coveted blue checkmark. The regular price for Blue is $8 per month, or $84 per year.
With Facebook already offering support for lengthy posts, you probably won’t feel the need to switch. This could be useful, though, if you want to share the same post on multiple social media sites without having to rewrite it or make any significant changes.
Undoubtedly, Twitter is under pressure to improve Blue and make it more appealing so more people could join. Midway through January, reports indicated that only about 290,000 people around the world had subscribed to Twitter Blue.
Elon Musk has stated that he hopes to generate half of Twitter’s revenue from subscriptions, but the updated plan hasn’t been out for very long and thus must be very appealing to enthusiasts in order to achieve this goal.
