Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir have announced a one-month ban including Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and 22 other social media networks.
The order to block social media according to media reports was to maintain public order as the authorities claimed that some elements were using social media to rally support against the rule of Indian in Kashmir.
The government said in a statement: “The government hereby directs all internet service providers that any message through the following social networking sites shall not be transmitted in Kashmir Valley with immediate effect for a period of one month or till further orders, whichever is earlier.”
The social media networks affected by the order include Wechat; QQ; Google Plus; Skype; Qzone Line; Pinterest; Snapchat; Flickr, YouTube; and Vine.
Kashmir has been at the centre of years of territorial dispute between Pakistan and India.
