Twitter Blue, the company’s first subscription service, now allows its paid subscribers to upload videos that are longer than the usual 10-minute-long videos on the platform. “Subscribers can upload videos up to 60 minutes long (1080p) (web only),” the company said via its support page.
By “web only,” it means Android and iOS users can’t access the feature yet. “If you are a Twitter Blue subscriber, you can upload videos up to 10 minutes via our Android or iOS apps.” “For videos longer than 10 minutes, use Twitter.com.”
Twitter now has more work to do in trying to fight piracy of content since longer videos of up to 1 hour can now be uploaded on the platform. There is a chance that people will upload full episodes of TV shows or movies, which would require the social network’s human moderators and automated systems to act quickly to get rid of the content.
For a short time last month, the company’s copyright systems went down, prompting users to upload full movies in fragments. It will now be easier for pirates to upload someone else’s content due to the new 60-minute video limit.
Concerns have also been raised about how to make money off video content. Unlike YouTube, which routinely inserts multiple ads into longer videos, it’s currently unclear whether Twitter has any such plans.
In addition to having more space for video uploads, subscribers will also be given priority in getting their questions answered. The company says that subscribers “will see a slight preference for replies from Blue Verified accounts over other replies.” It simply means that replies from paid accounts will appear first. It’s unclear, though, how Twitter plans to deal with users who pay to troll or spam others in exchange for a higher response rate.
In the wake of Twitter Blue’s disastrous debut in November, the company led by Musk relaunched the service earlier this month. In order to cover the costs of the App Store, the company is now charging $11 monthly for iOS users and $8 monthly for web subscribers.
This week, the company introduced its “Blue for Business” product, which provides a way for businesses to distinguish themselves and their affiliated brands and employees with a special square badge.
