Tupuca has won the Angola round of the global Seedstars competition earning the food delivery startup the opportunity to pitch for around US$1 million in equity investment at the global final in Switzerland next April.
This year, global early-stage startups competition Seedstars World has been hosting a series of local events across Africa which has seen winners emerge in countries like Mozambique, Tunisia, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal ,Cameroon and Rwanda.
The Angolan leg of the competition took place in Luanda on Friday, October 13, with eight startups pitching. The overall winner was Tupuca, an online food delivery platform serving 20,000 customers.
The startup will now represent Angola at the Seedstars regional summit in Mozambique in December, as well as the global final in Switzerland next year.
Tupuca has an app that is free and simple to use. It has a list of variety of cuisines with menus and reviews. The service is guaranteed secured as users are quite acquainted with the drivers set for deliveries who also can be tracked on the map in real time.
Tupuca has so far delivered over 80 000 meals in the first year and has created over 75 jobs
According to Erickson Mvezi, co-founder of Tupuca, “Tupuca has been officially introduced to the world. We believe that we have unlocked new opportunities by winning Seedstar Luanda 2017. We can’t wait to see what Mozambique and the rest of the world has to offer.”
In a statement made by the regional manager for Africa at Seedstars World, Claudia Makadristo, “Tupuca competed in last year’s edition as well but weren’t strong enough at that time to win. We are extremely proud of the progress they have made since then, and for them to come back with so much traction this edition does not only show courage, but also determination and persistence. Tupuca is the deserved winner for this year’s edition.”
The first runner up was Na Via, a startup that tries to upgrade the way low income people access advertising campaigns, while crowdfunding platform Deya took third place.
The jury was represented by Kianda Hub founder Joel Epalange, Jobartis founder Adrian Vinuales, Infrasat marketing director Emilia Dias, Banco Postal business strategy specialist Armando Teixeira and Angolan Stock Exchange executive administrator Akiules Neto.
