President Donald Trump has issued a new executive order to Bytedance for TikTok’s operations in the US. ByteDance now has 90 days to either sell or spin off its TikTok business in the US. In the order, Trump also says that there is “credible evidence” that ByteDance “might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States.”
Previously the Trump signed an executive order banning Chinese owned TikTok operations in the country in 45 days if it is not sold by ByteDance. ByteDance had said it would sue the Donald Trump administration, challenging the president’s executive order banning the service from the United States.
Trump’s change in stance has given a bit of reprieve to ByteDance as it now has a new deadline of November 12th instead of September 20th. ByteDance now has more time to work out the details of the sale of TikTok’s operations to an American company such as Microsoft or Twitter.
This new executive order requires that ByteDance destroys any TikTok data from US users, and report to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States once all the data has been destroyed. ByteDance must also destroy any data collected from TikTok precursor app Musical.ly, which the company bought in 2017
