President Donald Trump has publicly called for Microsoft to terminate Lisa Monaco, the company’s President of Global Affairs, citing her past roles in Democratic administrations and alleging she poses a threat to U.S. national security. The demand was made via Trump’s Truth Social account on September 27, and marks the latest in a series of moves targeting former officials involved in investigations into Trump’s conduct.
Monaco, who joined Microsoft in July 2025, oversees the company’s cybersecurity policy and global government relations. Her appointment drew criticism from Trump and far-right allies due to her previous tenure as Deputy Attorney General under President Joe Biden and her role as a national security aide under President Barack Obama.
In his post, Trump described Monaco as a “menace to U.S. National Security,” arguing that her access to sensitive information is “unacceptable,” especially given Microsoft’s extensive contracts with the federal government. He claimed that Monaco had been stripped of her security clearances, barred from federal properties, and denied access to national intelligence due to “wrongful acts”.
Trump’s criticism is part of a broader campaign of retribution against officials he believes were involved in politically motivated investigations. Monaco played a key role in overseeing probes into Trump’s alleged election interference and mishandling of classified documents, alongside Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Microsoft has declined to comment on Trump’s remarks. The company continues to maintain significant partnerships with U.S. government agencies, including recent agreements to provide $3.1 billion in cloud service savings for federal use.
The controversy was amplified by far-right activist Laura Loomer, a close Trump ally, who claimed credit for alerting the president to Monaco’s hiring. Loomer has repeatedly criticized Microsoft and CEO Satya Nadella, even calling for the cancellation of all government contracts with the company.
This episode follows Trump’s earlier demand for the resignation of Intel President Lip-Bu Tan, whom he later praised after Intel agreed to a government equity deal. It reflects Trump’s ongoing efforts to reshape the political and corporate landscape by targeting individuals he views as adversaries.
