After banning former President Donald Trump, Twitter announces that it would like to hear from the public on whether or not they believe world leaders should be subject to the same rules as others on Twitter. It’s clear the company is still dealing with the aftermath of Trump’s Ban.
Twitter made this announcement on Thursday, 18th of March and intends to use a public survey. The aim is to review its approach to world leaders so that its policies remain relevant to the ever-changing nature of political discourse on Twitter and also protect the health of the public conversation. According to the company, “This will help inform the development of our policy framework”.
The poll will run for a period of 24 days (March 19th to April 12th). Twitter plans to roll out the questionnaire in 14 languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Urdu. The essence of this is to ensure a global perspective is reflected in the feedback.
While many feel Trump’s ban was justified, some feel it sets a dangerous precedent — and yet others think it came too late. Still, establishing firmer, clearer rules going forward is probably in everyone’s best interest. Hopefully, the poll can help guide these best practices.
