Truecaller has disclosed in a statement it has hit over 100 million daily active users.
This latest development is a massive rise in less than one year from 100 million monthly active users to 100 million daily users with no sign of slowing down.
According to the statement released, “With more than 20 percent of its user base in Africa, Truecaller app service identifies more than half a billion calls a month in the region, and 50 percent of the SMS received are spam. In Nigeria, the application blocks and filters more than 13 million calls and 25 million spam SMS per month.”
Truecaller has a huge user base in Africa especially in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa and it is one of the fastest growing consumer apps in Africa.
Speaking on the development in a recent blog post, CEO of Truecaller, Alan Mamedi said, “Close to a decade ago, we set out to solve what we thought was a simple problem – how to figure out who these unknown numbers belong to that keeps calling us; little did we know how big of a problem that actually was in all corners of the world.
“It was so big, in fact, that Truecaller is pleased and excited to announce that we now have more than 100 million daily active users using our app for their daily communication. There are only a handful of mobile-only services that impact as many users each and every day and we are humbled to be able to join this exclusive group.”
Truecaller’s popularity has hinged on its ability to help mobile phone users identify SPAM and also recognize callers to determine whether to pick a call or not.
According to Itedgenews, in a recent study conducted by Truecaller, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt rank among the top 20 countries in the world being plagued by unwanted spam calls. According to reports, the app has identified and blocked more than half a billion spam calls in Africa on a monthly basis and over 50% of all messages received by users in the region are considered as spam.
However, the platform over the years has evolved from just being a Caller ID and spam blocking app, to a full-fledged communications platform with calling, SMS, Flash Messages and payment services.
Mamedi said, “We could never have predicted that Truecaller would become an indispensable resource for women’s safety in many countries; or that it would be used for e-commerce and courier services around the globe to facilitate the difficult last mile of delivery; or allow more people to experience a data-only product in offline mode.
“Truecaller is more than just an app on your phone, it has aided in bridging the digital divide between the urban and growing semi-urban/rural markets in India; and has even enabled more African businesses to accept online payment.”
It is however noteworthy that Truecaller’s portfolio of operations in Nigeria also includes a recent deal with VConnect allowing Truecaller to integrate VConnect’s Business directory to its app. The integration allows Truecaller’s users to efficiently identify service providers and others on Nigeria’s top digital business directory.
