In case you’re not aware, Google has a feature that allows users to share files between two Android devices. It’s called Nearby Share and operates just like a feature on Apple called ‘AirDrop’. With Nearby Share, you are allowed to share files, links, etc., faster to other Android users through a very simple process that is also streamlined. Most people find this feature on their Android smartphones but don’t know what it is about nor how to use it. If you can’t find it on your device that because you’re using an Android device that is below the expected Andriod 6.0 and above.
However, there are a few things to note before you can use this feature.
- You can only share with people in your contacts list.
- You need to turn on location, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.
How to use Nearby Share to share a file (e.g. Picture)
Step 1: Swipe down the notifications to find the icon. Turn it on. But make sure location, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi icons are turned on as well.
Step 2: Select an image from your gallery and look for the share icon and click it.
Step 3: It gives you several options to share. To use Nearby Share you need to look for this icon
Step 4: If there’s an android device close with the Nearby Share feature turned on, a message will pop up and all you need to do is click “Accept”. The image is immediately transferred.
File transfer using Nearby Feature is very fast. Apart from photos, you can share apps, videos, links, and more. Google says that in order for the recipient to get your file or app, your recipient’s device must be running the latest version of Files by Google that includes Nearby Share. The recipient must accept the file or app you send. The same thing for receiving files. Your device must be running the latest version of Files by Google that includes Nearby Share.
As shown in the screenshot once ‘Show notification’ is turned on, Bluetooth scanning is used to notify you if someone wants to share with you, even when Nearby Share is turned off. Turning off “Show notification” means that you won’t be notified when someone nearby is sharing a file with you. Turning on the feature makes your device visible.
