Telegram’s CEO and founder, Pavel Durov, unveiled the company’s plans today to introduce its advertising platform next month. This development will permit channel owners to receive financial earnings through toncoin on the TON blockchain. The company will begin to disburse 50% of all revenue obtained from ads shown in respective channels to the owners.
Telegram channels enable users to disseminate public messages to extensive audiences. In spite of Telegram channels amassing one trillion views each month, only 10% of that viewership is monetized via Telegram Ads, the firm’s promotional instrument, according to Durov. In March, just about 100 countries will have access to the Telegram Ad Platform, signifying a pivotal move towards content monetization.
While the company hasn’t revealed details about who would be eligible for this format, TechCrunch is making an effort to learn more about the specifics.
In his announcement published on Telegram, Durov wrote, “To ensure ad payments and withdrawals are fast and secure, we will exclusively use the TON blockchain”. Drawing parallels to their course of action with Telegram usernames on Fragment, ad sales and revenue sharing with channel proprietors will be conducted in Toncoin. This approach will enable content creators to choose between cashing out their Toncoins or reinvesting them into channel promotions and improvements.
News of this development triggered an almost 40% surge in the TON token value to over $2.92, which currently values at $2.65.
With this most recent move, Telegram joins the ranks of platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), both of which extend ad revenue sharing with their users. YouTube’s Partner Program offers a 55% share of ad revenue to creators, while X initiated user revenue sharing in July 2023. Meta has also been experimenting with a new payout structure for its Ads on Reels program.
Telegram has over 800 million monthly active users globally and generates more than 500 billion views on broadcast channels every month.
