Changes are being made to TikTok in an effort to prevent deadly challenges and hoaxes from spreading on the network. Generally speaking, TikTok is an excellent social networking platform that allows users to unwind by watching humorous videos, viral phenomena, and engaging challenges. In some cases, though, it may be a harmful place where users are exposed to life-threatening challenges.
Since its inception a few years ago, TikTok has grown exponentially, to the point where it has swiftly established itself as the go-to destination for short-form videos for many individuals all over the world. While this has been the case, the platform has not been without its share of controversy, with some users expressing worries about their privacy and security. On top of that, there are concerns about the platform’s risks.
With over 10,000 parents, teenagers, and instructors questioned across the globe, TikTok says it’s learning about difficulties and trends outside TikTok. Most of the challenges were safe or low risk, according to TikTok. But 17% thought they were “risky or dangerous” or “extremely dangerous” (14 and 3-per cent, respectively). Notably, only 0.3 per cent claimed they have taken part in a really risky task. In terms of suicide and self-harm hoaxes, 37% of parents said it was difficult to discuss them “without sparking interest,” while 31% of youth said they had “a negative influence.”
TikTok highlighted that hoaxes “may impair teen well-being” even if the warnings are “posted with the greatest of intentions.” The platform will “remove alarmist warnings” to prevent any hoaxes from being taken seriously. It will also include new technologies that will inform the company’s safety experts if it detects potentially risky conduct. For example, if the platform notices a rise in material (that violates its regulations) using a given hashtag, the safety team will investigate.
TikTok claims this will help it “protect against potentially dangerous trends or conduct.” When users try to find detrimental challenges or hoaxes, the corporation will employ stronger wording.
Generally speaking, these are positive steps in the correct direction. Some may struggle to determine which tasks are safe and which are not, despite the challenges’ intended enjoyment and engagement. And given that 46% of kids desire more information to help comprehend the hazards associated with a challenge, TikTok should provide as much information as possible.
