TikTok has added a new feature to its app that will let users restrict live stream viewers to just adults. As TechCrunch reported, “the new setting is currently in limited testing with select users.”
Some users have reported seeing the new option to toggle on live streams with the so-called “mature themes” button to restrict their LIVE to “only viewers 18 and above”.
This, however, doesn’t give adult users the permission to create content as they want. All content created for the platform, including adults-only live streams are still subject to TikTok’s policies. These include policies on nudity, sexual activity and violence. So creating such content for live streams will result in punitive actions for your account.
Instead, it’s a way for creators to prevent minors from encountering content that’s aimed toward an adult audience or may be uninteresting to them.
This comes few week to TikTok’s testing a feature that rates content to keep suggestive or mature content from reaching adolescents who use the app.
The short-video social platform is keen on promoting safety, security and well-being on the platform.
People have continued to criticise TikTok because of the type of content it exposes its younger viewers to.
The company is now adding several changes with the aim of protecting its users, especially those who might be exposed to unhealthy content or be abused online.
“We’ve heard directly from our creators that they sometimes have a desire to only reach a specific older audience. So, as an example, maybe they’re creating a comedy that has adult humour, or offering kind of boring workplace tips that are relevant only to adults. Or maybe they’re talking about very difficult life experiences…so given those varieties of topics, we’re testing ways to help better empower creators to reach the intended audience for their specific content,” said Tracy Elizabeth, TikTok’s US Head of Issue Policy.
Therefore, users should watch out for more of these kinds of feature in the future.
