Bytedance, the company behind TikTok, is planning to expand its music streaming service globally to compete with industry leaders like Spotify and Apple Music. WSJ reports that the company has begun talks with music labels and it plans to integrate music streaming within its short-video service and scale it to serve as a major platform for distributing music globally.
The company’s music streaming business Resso is currently available in India, Indonesia and Brazil and it has recently discussed launching in additional markets. However, it is said that expansion does not immediately include the United States.
It is however not clear if the Resso brand would be used in these other markets as it was reported recently by Business Insider that ByteDance had filed a trademark application for “TikTok Music”.
The proposed application, originally filed in Australia in November, followed by the US in May, would allow users to “purchase, play, share, download music, songs, albums, lyrics” as well as “live stream audio and video”.
A search on Twitter revealed that the account “TikTok Music” was created February 2022. Other country specific TikTok Music are also available.
ByteDance has not officially commented on this development.
