TikTok today announced TikTok Library, an in-app creation platform designed to help creators access entertainment content and engage in trends. In a press release, the animation platform announced, “Today we’re announcing an exciting new integration of GIPHY Clips within TikTok — our first major integration with a video platform.”
The Libary will first feature content from GIPHY, such as GIPHY Clips, which are animated GIFs with sound. TikTok said it plans to add more content sources, audio and sound files, text templates, and TikTok creator content to the Library.
Originally known as GIPHY Video, GIPHY Clips was introduced in 2019 as a platform for GIPHY’s entertainment partners, such as movie studios, video game developers, record labels, sports leagues, and other media outlets, to distribute appropriately licensed content on GIPHY’s platform. More and more content creators are taking advantage of GIFs with sound—also known as short-form video—to reach GIPHY’s millions of active users every day. It’s possible to embed these GIPHY Clips into a variety of third-party programs, including Slack and other workplace chat services, by using GIPHY’s developer toolset (the GIPHY SDK).
GIPHY Clips categories like Reactions, Quotes, People, and Iconic Moments will be supported at launch by TikTok, according to the company. Quotes are catchphrases and sayings from famous people that have been retweeted thousands of times. Anyone who has a following, such as a celebrity or an athlete, could be included in the People category. Things like outstanding sporting performances, award-show speeches, and other priceless moments from significant occasions constitute Iconic Moments.
In GIPHY’s announcement, it claims TikTok’s integration will feature tens of thousands of GIPHY Clips as well as millions of GIFs from GIPHY’s larger database. Even while TikTok already has a slew of creative tools built into its social video app, the company notes it is always looking for new ways to enable its users to express themselves. This is where the GIPHY integration comes into play.
