Though TikTok debuted in 2016 as a source of 15 second short length videos, it extended its video length to 3 minutes in July 2021.
The company has now increased the maximum video length to 10 minutes. Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared this new development on his Twitter handle
“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok,” said a company spokesperson in a statement. “Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”
As mentioned by Matt Navarra, TikTok is truly moving into YouTube space with this development, which would certianly help to capture an older audience and increase overall engagement time on the app.
Interestingly, the success of TikTok’s short length videos made competitors like Instagram introduce Reels in 2020 and YouTube, Shorts also in 2020.
TikTok says the ability to roll out longer videos will be available to content creators globally in the next couple of weeks. Users will be notified when they receive the update. However they need to ensure that the have the latest version of TikTok before trying out the feature.
