TikTok Emerges as the most Downloaded App for 2020

A digital analytics company, App Annie has revealed that the video-sharing platform, TikTok, was the world’s most downloaded app in 2020. The short video platform beat social media giant, Facebook, to gain the top spot.

Interestingly, TikTok is the only app not owned by Facebook among the global top five download titans.

TikTok’s owner ByteDance holds the top spot in China with the Chinese language video app Douyin.

The video-sharing platform soared in popularity following an attempt by former US President Donald Trump to ban it in America.

Since the survey started in 2018, Facebook-owned apps have held the top spot and the company still dominated the chart.

TikTok Is Experimenting A New “Stories” Feature

In the top five aside from TikTok are Facebook-owned apps to include Facebook’s flagship app as well as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.

Just last year, then-President Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban new downloads of the TikTok app in the US.

The Trump administration claimed that TikTok posed a national security risk as the Chinese government had access to its user data. The company repeatedly consequently denied the allegations.

However, US President Joe Biden since becoming the US president has withdrawn Trump’s executive order.

The company has also been seeking avenues to attract users. One of such is its experiment with vanishing videos which will allow users to see content posted by accounts they follow for 24 hours before they are deleted.
