Three new generative AI features will be introduced in Google’s upcoming Chrome update

With the release of Chrome M121, Google is introducing new AI-driven features to enhance browser usability. These include a tab organizer, a writing tool, and personalized artwork and themes. Users can access these features by enabling the ‘Experimental AI’ option from the Settings page found in the three-dot dropdown menu.

The Tab Organizer provides automatic suggestions by the built-in AI to categorize open tabs in Chrome windows or even create groups, which would be handy for users with multiple recurring tabs. By clicking ‘Organize Similar Tabs,’ the AI groups together open pages based on their topics. Examples include all shopping-related tabs being clustered together, with the AI suggesting a fitting name like ‘Ski-trip shopping gear.’

The upcoming text assist function has practical implications as well. It will operate as an experimental tool aiding users in creating text, whether for Google reviews or social media posts. To activate this feature upon launch, users must choose the “Help me write” option, allowing the tool to finish their sentences or offer text continuation suggestions.

Similar to other Google tools like Mail or Docs, Chrome now offers the ability to personalize browser visuals, an extension of the AI wallpapers recently developed for Pixel phones. To customize, users need to click on the ‘Customize Chrome’ button on the side panel, and instruct the AI to create a theme. Users can then search for a description like ‘small beach town’ or ‘Blade Runner vibes’, and preview AI-generated themes before making a selection.

These new features rival those introduced by Microsoft’s AI-infused Bing engine in September, which include AI-powered tab grouping and a text composition assistant. Despite this, Chrome continues to hold a significant lead in the US browser market, well ahead of competitors including Firefox and Opera, with Bing often categorized in the ‘others’ category.
