Bluesky may be gaining traction, but Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, wants to emphasize that Threads remains significantly larger. In a post on Thursday, Mosseri highlighted that Threads had achieved “more than 15 million signups in November alone,” seemingly aiming to downplay Bluesky’s milestone of reaching 15 million users in total as of Wednesday.
Mosseri also reiterated that Threads has been consistently attracting over a million new signups per day. This statistic was initially shared by CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the company’s earnings call last month. Mosseri noted that this high volume of daily signups has been sustained for nearly three months.
Many users have been migrating to Bluesky in search of an alternative platform to post on, avoiding X (formerly Twitter), which is owned by Elon Musk, a known supporter of Donald Trump, or Threads, where users have raised concerns about engagement bait, moderation issues, misinformation, and the algorithmic feed. Mosseri acknowledged these challenges, stating, “we have a lot more work to do,” and assured that the company’s teams are “working hard to get this community what they need.” However, it is worth noting that Meta might soon introduce ads on Threads, a move that could be met with resistance from users.
Additionally, Mosseri shared an update last night regarding Threads’ user experience. The platform no longer prompts new users to follow everyone they already follow on Instagram. “We’ve been running a test for a while now, and it looks like people actually prefer their experience if they build a different graph on Threads than the graph they had on Instagram,” he explained. Mosseri also appears open to the idea of developing a Threads-specific direct messaging (DM) system, which could address one of the key advantages that Bluesky currently holds over Threads.
