On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, made a public announcement that the company’s messaging app, Threads, has surpassed the milestone of 175 million monthly active users. This significant user base has been amassed just shy of a year since the app’s launch, with its first anniversary approaching in two days. Back in April, the tech billionaire revealed that Threads had surpassed 150 million MAUs, up from 130 million in February.
Threads, launched on July 3, 2023, is a social media platform focused on real-time, public conversations among users. Its launch occurred as many users were looking for alternatives to X (formerly Twitter) due to substantial changes introduced by Elon Musk. Remarkably, the platform reached 100 million users within five days, setting the record as the fastest-growing app in history.
In a recent statement, Elon Musk claimed that his platform, X, now boasts a monthly active user count of 600 million, with half of these individuals engaging with the platform on a daily basis. However, Musk did not provide details on whether this figure accounts for automated or spam accounts.
In conjunction with the announcement about Threads’ growing user base, Meta provided insights into user behavior on the platform. According to Meta, the majority of activity on Threads is text-based, with 63% of all posts consisting solely of text. Nevertheless, image sharing is also a common practice on Threads, with one out of every four posts containing at least one image.
Meta also highlighted the creation of over 50 million Tags on Threads, with the most popular ones being PhotographyThreads, BookThreads, and GymThreads.
While the monthly active user count is an important metric, it does not provide a complete picture of Threads’ overall performance. However, it does indicate that a significant number of users are engaging with the platform. Part of the reason for Threads’ growing popularity may be attributed to its integration with and promotion on Instagram.
Since its launch, Threads has introduced many requested features, including a web app, trending topics, and an edit button. It recently rolled out its much-anticipated API (Application Programming Interface) thereby enabling third-party developers to build a wide range of integrations and applications that enhance the Threads experience. It has however not started significant revenue as it does not have advertising yet.
