This smartphone from Andy Rubin’s Essential looks more like a remote control

Andy Rubin, the ex-Googler behind Essential Products has just tweeted some pictures about a new device from the company, probably in development, that looks more like a remote control than a smartphone.

Is it the next smartphone we should be expecting from the company? Would it change the fortunes of the phone manufacturer’s business? The company has struggled to sell devices, reportedly shipping only 88,000 handsets in its first year.

Not much is known about this device. We are not quite sure if the long slim device is foldable. According to an official statement from the company, “We’ve been working on a new device that’s now in early testing with our team outside the lab. We look forward to sharing more in the near future. “

Rubin shares rear images of four different shiny colour finishes and it shows it has a fingerprint sensor and a large bulge for a single camera lens.

One wonders whether there would be any other dramatic feature that would endear the phone to would-be customers.

Unfortunately Andy Rubin, CEO of Essential products, has been in the news lately for other reasons rather than technology. And this has been in contrast to the hitherto hero status of the Android creator when he left Google. The New York Times published a report showing how Google covered up alleged sexual misconduct.
