Apart from being social creatures, human beings are always curious. That’s why sites like Quora, Google search were created, first, to make our lives easier, then, to quench our never-ending thirst for information.
Are you aware that there are about 5.4 billion searches alone on Google per day? That’s like almost 227 million searches in just 60 seconds. Humans are on curiosity binge, and there’s an immeasurable amount of information available just at the touch of a button.
However, most people are yet to understand how to do a proper search on Google. They limit their search to a few tools (maybe tricks) and are yet to fully maximise the search engine’s potential. If after you practise what you’re going to learn in this article, you will improve your chances of finding what it is you’re looking for quickly.
There are useful terms you can type into the search query while conducting research, and different types of searches you can do.
1). Define
To get the definition of any word, add define before the word. For example, you’re trying to figure out what ‘prospectus’ means. For better search performance, don’t just type the word ‘prospectus’ in the search query and click enter. Add define to the word ‘prospectus’.
2). Pronounce
The term Pronounce is also a word that helps individuals who are learning the correct pronunciation of certain words in English Language.
“Pronounce” + “English Word You Want To Learn” = The Right Pronunciation.
Let’s try this!
- Open Google Search, on your mobile device or laptop.
- Type Pronounce then any word you’d like to know the correct pronunciation. Again, I’ve used the word Prospectus as an example.
The page above will be displayed, and you will have the opportunity to listen to the right pronunciation when you click the icon that looks like a speaker. Google even gives you the option to listen slowly when you check the box icon that displays ‘Slow’. You also have the option to choose between the American and British pronunciation.
3). Translate
Google has made it possible for you to write (maybe chat) in any language you desire using Translate. To translate, the Google’s search query should look like the following in the box
[Word] + [in] + [name of language]
Example,
[Prospectus] + [in] + [Portuguese]
As shown below, Google gives you an opportunity to pronounce the word and get the translation back in the language you requested.
4). Weather
Google also understands that people need to find the weather in their location. To get the current weather at your location just type or say weather. To get the weather for another location, use the word weather followed by that location.
Let’s try this using Voice Search instead of typing into the query box.
See that speaker icon? Click it and say Weather. I did, it displayed the page below with a voice in the background.
How about if you want to travel from your current location to a city in another country? It’s simple!
- Open Google Search
- Click on the microphone icon.
- Now speak, [Weather] [Location] e.g. [Weather] [Cape Town]
5). Customer Service
Have you ever had trouble finding the customer service phone number for a company? Just by speaking the [Name Of That Particular Company] followed by the words [Customer Service], you have the phone number easily. Try it! Below is an example I did with [MTN Nigeria] followed by [Customer Service].
There are other searches you can do using existing key terms which Google’s search query understands such as Stock Price to get the current stock pricing of a particular company. You can also find out certain details about celebrities by typing or speaking their name and detail you need (e.g. Burna Boy Age).
The whole idea is to be able to conduct search properly on Google to had quality results faster. I hope this helpful?
