    The Number of GSM Subscribers Hit 204.87 Million in September-NCC

    The Nigerian Communication Commission has reported an increase in the total number of subscribers to the Global System of Mobile Communications GSM) in the country. The numbers hit  204.87 million in September 2020, growing by 15 percent year-on-year.

    According to the latest monthly report by the commission, the four mobile network operators gained a total of 25.97 million new subscribers.

    According to Punch, the data showed that MTN gained the highest number of subscribers in the one year under review, adding 17.19 million new subscribers to its network to reach 82.64 million customers by September 2020.

    Airtel added 6.34 million new customers to reach 55.25 million users and Globacom gained 5.04 million new subscribers in one year, recording a total of 54.25 million GSM users.

    9mobile was the only operator that lost subscribers in the one year as 2.6 million mobile network users left the network, dropping to 12.73 million mobile users.

    The NCC September account shows that MTN is still the largest mobile network operator with a 40.34 percent market share.

    The report places Airtel second at 26.97 percent while Globacom clinched the third spot at 26.48 percent while 9mobile remained the fourth operator with a market share of 6.21 percent.

    The NCC data revealed that between September 2019 and September 2020, a total of 28.27 million new Internet users joined the mobile network operators.

    During this period, MTN gained the highest number of Internet users,12.68 million in one year. Globacom followed closely with 9.76 million new Internet users within the same period and Airtel gained 7.11 million Internet users in one year.

    9mobile recorded contrasting fortunes as 1.19 million Internet users dumped the network in the one year under review.
