As we round up the last day of the year 2014, King A-Maz takes a peek into what 2015 will bring in the way of innovation. Here are the top picks of the most anticipated technological innovations expected in 2015.
Google Glass
Google Glass is set to revolutionize wearable technology. The glasses act as an extension of a mobile device showing the wearer notifications, maps, and so many things that will need a stand-alone post to describe. Testing began in 2012 and Explorer Editions were made available to developers and select groups of individuals in 2013. However, the world is still waiting for the commercial version to be released which is being hinted to be released in 2015.
Apple Watch
Apple Watch ( WATCH) is a smartwatch created by Apple Inc. It was announced by Tim Cook on September 9, 2014. The watch has fitness tracking and health-oriented capabilities, as well as integration with iOS and existing Apple products and services. The Apple Watch is scheduled to be available in three models, with a wide variety of case and band options. The Apple Watch is compatible with the iPhone 5 and later iPhone models running iOS 8.2. The device is scheduled for release in early 2015 and despite its late entry into the smart watch market, the announcement with a lot of hype and fanfare.
Windows 10
While Windows 8 was not much of a success in a lot of areas, Windows 10 promises to be everything Windows 8 should have been and more. The new OS will bring back the popular start menu whose removal in Windows 8 was subject of much controversy. The start menu is revamped and yet user-friendly. While previews of the new, sleek design have already hit the market, a full version won’t be available until next year.
Apple iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus
Apple is set to go against the convention by releasing a 4 inch iPhone 6. Characteristically, Apple has not revealed much information about their next year releases but Apple fanboys have already started making speculations and concept versions.
iOS 9
iOS 9 is the presumptive name for Apple’s next-generation mobile OS which, if Apple holds to pattern, will be introduced at WWDC 2015 at Moscone Center in San Francisco on or around June 8, 2015. There’s no word yet on what iOS 9’s codename is, or what features it will contain. However, based on rumored features for iOS 8 that supposedly haven’t yet been finished, we could see further CarPlay and Siri improvements, multi-window app support, and more.
iPhone 7
iPhone 7 is also set to be released next year with rumours of liquid metal, a new (dual lens) camera design and what Apple calls “sidewall displays” as evidenced by patents.
Android 5 Lollipop
Android’s new OS update known as Lollipop has gotten Android enthusiasts excited – me included. The OS comes with a complete UI overhaul, and changes the way a lot of things on Android are done. I wrote about all the awesome features of the Lollipop here. Although the update has rolled out to some Nexus devices, we will see it go to other manufacturers in early 2015
Android M
Android L is barely out and developers are already excited about Android M. The idea is to make Android the standard for controlling navigation and entertainment, no matter what phone the driver is holding. Some automakers, like Hyundai and Honda have already announced plans for systems that run their own custom flavors of Android, but it sounds like this could go much further — if any automakers actually plug it into their vehicles. We should be able to get more details at the Google I/O in 2015
Samsung Galaxy S6
Samsung’s most successful series of phone is set to make its new appearance next year. The S6 always brings new features onboard and has probably the most loyal following after the iPhone. Unlike its predecessors, the G6 is said to feature a metallic body as opposed to the ‘cheap plastic’ body that previous models have been heavily criticized for. As for technology, much is expected from the GS6 as not much innovation was brought into the Galaxy S5
Snapdragon 810
Qualcomm, manufacturers of the Snapdragon series of CPUs used in most smartphones and laptops including the OnePlus One, HTC One (M8), Gionee ELIFE E7L, LG G3,Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z3, Motorola Moto X , HTC Desire Eye, the Blackberry Passport, etc have made a lot of promises with their new Snapdragon 810 processor. I wrote about it in 4 SMARTPHONE INNOVATIONS YOU CAN EXPECT IN 2015 (COURTESY OF QUALCOMM)
Apple iPad Pro (12” model)
Apple is expected to release a bigger iPad called the iPad Pro. The release of the 12.9 inch tablet has reportedly been pushed back to the second quarter of 2015 due to poor sales of other tablet sales. KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is employing oxide LCD technology for the larger iPad’s high resolution display, affording quick response times and high color saturation.
