It will really be interesting not to depend on gasoline, diesel or electricity to fuel our automobiles. Innovation has extended its wings with the latest bus being run by human faeces. The U.K.’s first “bio-bus” is powered by bio-methane gas, which is generated through the treatment of sewage. This can be called number two bio-bus.
With a full tank, the “Bio-Bus” which seats 40 passengers can travel up to 186 miles, while producing up to 30% fewer emissions compared to diesel-powered buses.
The eco-friendly bus started regular service on Monday and is expected to carry around 10,000 passengers a month between the Bristol airport and the historic town of Bath.
“The bus is powered by people living in the local area, including quite possibly those on the bus itself,” said Mohammed Saddiq from GENeco, the company that runs the sewage treatment facility providing the fuel. He said one person’s annual waste could power the bus for around 37 miles.
According to Clean Energy Fuels, biomethane gas, when used to power vehicles, can reduce greenhouse emissions by 88% compared to gasoline. The gas is chemically identical to natural gas, but is created using “fresh” matter instead of decomposed matter. Carbon dioxide is removed from the waste and propane is added to power vehicles like the Bio-Bus.
