    The dos and don’ts of creating hashtags

    The complexities of marketing a new product have been demystified with the entry of social media which is now virtually used for many online marketing campaigns. In other words, social media is now a key feature in any serious business Integrated Marketing Communication. One way to take advantage of this new media trend is the use of hashtag.

    Hashtag (#) in social media is mainly used to search for conversations, images, and categorize contents. A hashtag makes a particular subject easy to find.

    Interestingly, hashtags ensure that a particular content gets more engagement especially if you use a trending one. If used appropriately, you will be surprised at how your engagements and followership will significantly rise.

    Here are reliable tips on how to create hashtags to increase brand awareness on social media. Ensure that you do your research before you create any hashtags.

    Use keywords as hashtags

    If your business is an  E-commerce Industry one, use hashtags that are closely related or connected with the e-commerce sector. For example, #DiscountCode, #Coupons, #OrderTracking, and #UniqueUsers are some of related hashtags . In line with this, ensure that the hashtags are relevant to the subject.

    Keep hashtags short

    Make your hashtag a KISS. That is Keep, It Short and Simple. A short, precise and simple hashtag will be easy to find, not difficult to recall when typing or contributing to a particular subject.

    Disguise hashtags within message

    There are some trending hashtags that do not necessarily carry the hashtag sign. So, if this particular tag is related to your subject, you can use it when composing your message. It will definitely get you the hits and reach you want.

    Do not use too many hashtags into one message

    In your enthusiasm to increase engagement, you congest a tweet with too many hashtags. This is a bad practice that guarantees the neglect of your social media messages. Meanwhile, cramming messages with hashtags on Instagram is relatively understandable but not on twitter.

    Do not hashtag every word

    When composing a message and you hashtag each word, it will never have the desired impact. The rule of thumb is- Hashtag only the created or trending hashtag.

    No spacing of hashtags

    If you want your conversations, interactions and contributions to be found without difficulties on twitter, do not space your hashtag. This is important becuase it will be a waste of time and loss of ample engagement opportunities if you inadvertently space your hashtags. In fact, you may not get any response from your audience like you do if you do not space the tags.  For example, the correct use is #CoolOverNightLounge not #Cool Over Night Lounge.
