Teraco, a digital realty-owned company, is set to expand its CT2 hyperscale data center in Cape Town, South Africa. The 30MW expansion, known as CT2 Phase 2, will be completed by early 2025 and aims to meet the rising demand from both enterprise clients and hyperscale cloud providers.
Teraco emphasises its commitment to growing capacity across core hubs, enabling clients to scale and capitalise on digital transformation in sub-Saharan Africa.
CT2 Phase 2 Expansion
CT2 Phase 2 will consist of four data halls of 5.3MW, two data halls of 3.1MW, and two data halls of 2.2MW. The entire CT2 facility, spanning three levels, will support a total IT load of 50MW upon completion. CT2 is strategically located as part of Teraco’s Cape Town Campus and is connected to CT1 through diverse fiber routes. Clients in these facilities can directly access AWS Direct Connect and Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute or use Teraco’s Africa Cloud Exchange.
CT2 has been designed with a focus on sustainability, incorporating environmentally sustainable cooling and water management designs. The facility features a closed-loop chilled water system, providing 100% free air cooling to minimise environmental impact.
Strategic Investment in Cape Town
Teraco’s expansion in Cape Town aligns with the city’s status as one of Africa’s most digitally-connected locations. The expansion will cater to the growing demand for data center capacity from thriving digital enterprises in telecoms, financial services, e-commerce, logistics, and retail.
Cape Town’s position as a confluence point for major subsea cable systems, such as Equiano, ACE, WACS, SAT-3/SAFE, makes it an attractive destination. The city anticipates the landing of the 2Africa cable system, further enhancing subsea cable connectivity.
Teraco’s Growing Data Center Platform
CT2 is the latest addition to Teraco’s expanding data center platform, increasing the company’s critical power load capacity to 185MW across various campuses. The expanded CT2 facility adheres to ISO9001, ISO27001, ISO50001, ISO14001, PCI-DSS, and ISAE3402 certifications. Sustainability measures include environmentally-conscious designs and monitoring technology to reduce water usage and enhance energy efficiency.
