Telecom companies react to Netflix in Nigeria

The telecom companies in Nigeria have already started reacting to the arrival of Netflix.

As you would probably know, you need affordable data plans to enjoy TV or movie streaming. Hitherto it has been thought that data plans were expensive in Nigeria. With the arrival of the biggest player in the movie streaming business, the telcos are trying to bend over backwards to ride on the Netflix arrival.

Etisalat Nigeria was the first off the block with its “Netflix and Chill” ad shown below. The advert came online a day or two after Netflix’s arrival. One clever chap in the organisation thought it wise to make slight changes to its already existing movie packs

So with N400, you can enjoy 2 hours of movie streaming on Netflix in the comfort of your home or anywhere you are by using the Etisalat Netflix and Chill Data plan.

MTN Nigeria didn’t bother developing a new product but wanted to create awareness that you can use the regular smartphone bundle to enjoy Netflix. All you have to do is purchase a 4.5GB smartphone bundle at N2,500 monthly.

Airtel Nigeria reacted with its own version of Netflix related product riding on the back of its recent Time Based Pack product. Airtel says you can watch Netflix endlessly at N180 per hour, N20 cheaper than Etisalat.

As at the time of this report, we are still awaiting Globacom’s response.

Let’s all wait and see the impact Netflix’s impact will make on the data revenues of the telecom companies.
