Team HIVE from University of Ibadan in Nigeria beat four other finalists to win N1 million as first prize in the recently concluded Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition (PAADC)
PAADC, now in its third edition, is an initiative of the University of Lagos Engineering Society. It is designed to spark ingenuity in young minds, by challenging them to push the boundaries of science, technology, and environmental science, in solving problems in Nigeria.
Team HIVE is an elite African Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Society that leverages the skills of adequately talented university students to build a society of incredibly adept engineers that are ready to contribute innovatively and dynamically to the advancement of the rapidly evolving fields of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Hive creates an enabling environment for University students to co-work, co-learn and co-build so that when they invade the global work space. They actively generate financial resources by building and selling kits and educational materials (particularly for STEM) to eliminate the need to import these kits and pay heavy shipping fees.
The second and third winners were “TEAM WANTOPRINT” from Obafemi Awolowo University and“TEAM iGLASS” from Ahmadu Bello University.
Wantoprint is an online platform that fast- tracks the process of printing whilst also securing storage devices while iGlass is a low budget wearable device designed to help blind and visually impaired individuals to create a perception of vision from the sounds they hear.
The 2nd and 3rd winners went home with N800,000 and N700,000 respectively.
